Dr. Marie Menniti's Veterinary Advice

Maine Coons don’t necessarily have different nutrient requirements than other breeds. However, there are some things to keep in mind when choosing their diet to ensure they live a long and healthy life.

Here are some tips you can use when picking out a food for your Maine Coon cat.

1. Choose a diet with a source of insoluble fiber

Maine Coons have a long and luxurious coat. With a long-haired cat comes the increased risk that fur is accidentally swallowed while grooming.

With enough ingested fur, a hairball can form which can only be eliminated by vomiting. Ingredients which provide insoluble fiber, such as cellulose or beet pulp, can help to keep things moving in the gut.

If your cat gets hairballs frequently, regular brushing is another great way to prevent their occurrence.

2. Choose a diet that supports heart health

Unfortunately, Maine Coons have a genetic predisposition to heart disease. Omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to have a role in heart health.

Ingredients such as flax oil and fish oil are rich in omega-3 fatty acids that can be incorporated in the diet. Remember that these ingredients are mixed into a cat food in a balanced way.

You should check with your veterinarian before adding these as a supplement to your cat’s daily meals.

3. Consider your Maine Coon’s energy needs

A big cat will certainly have a big appetite! A Maine Coon will require enough calories to suit her large stature. You can ask your veterinarian for help with calculating daily calories. Just as with any breed of cat, Maine Coons can become overweight if they are fed too much.

Obesity has been found to be linked to heart disease in Maine Coons so it is extremely important that their daily calories match their needs.

To avoid overfeeding, measure out food using a gram scale as cups are inaccurate.

4. Consider your Maine Coon’s food preferences

Just like most cats, Maine Coons can be picky. There are a number of textures and flavors you can try with your cat to see which one works best. Diets differ in their water content, texture, and flavor. Some cats prefer crunchy dry kibbles while others thrive on high moisture canned foods.

If you have an especially picky Maine Coon you might want to consider choosing a high moisture diet. These can easily be warmed up which will release the foods meaty aroma and entice even the most finicky eaters.

5. Choose a food that is complete and balanced

The Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) has developed nutrient requirements for cat foods based on the historic body of nutrition research. A food that meets the AAFCO’s requirements will have an adequacy statement printed on the label, explaining the life stage it is suitable for. Choose a life stage that matches your cat’s age or nutritional needs.
